The companion to the book.
The book's first homework is to notice when one of your values gets stepped on or honored, and it offers a values assessment at no charge to help you find the words. This is where to get it.
What changed since the book went to print
The book names the Personal Values Assessment from the Barrett Values Centre, the one David describes using with leaders. Since then we have built our own, What Matters Now, and it is the one we offer readers at no charge.
It keeps what the book describes. You choose the ten that matter most to you from a list, then the three that matter most of all. It does not tell you who you should be. It offers language for what already matters.
What it is
A values assessment for practising curiosity about yourself: what is important to you now, and why. The phrases are written in our own words on a well-studied theory of human values from the social psychologist Shalom Schwartz. It takes a few minutes.
The result shows where your attention sits right now, which of your values tend to pull against each other, and three things to notice over the next week. Values move as life moves, so it is worth asking for again when something changes.
