Tresane WeQ, collective learning

It is simple once you see it.

The hard part is seeing it. Everything we do is one arc, and this page is that arc laid end to end.

  1. Bringing workplaces together is the point.

It is on the logo, and it is not decoration. Everything below is in service of it. A workplace that has come together is one where people can do good work without holding it all alone.

  2. Workplaces come together through teams.

Not through one leader getting better in isolation. A team is the smallest unit where the work actually lands, and it is the unit that either carries the weight or hands it all back to whoever is in charge.

  3. A leader reaches the team through three domains.

Align self, align relationships, align teams. That is the Tresane Model, and the reason all three matter is that alignment in only one or two does not hold. They point somewhere: they are how a leader gets to a team that owns the work. Remind me of the three domains →

  4. A team that works has WeQ.

IQ is what one person knows. EQ is how well they read themselves and others. WeQ is what a group is able to think, decide and do together. It is collective intelligence, and it is a learning model rather than a score.

Groups of clever people underperform all the time. What separates the ones that do not is rarely more talent in the room.

  5. Teams with WeQ practice psychological safety.

This is the part that gets misread. Amy Edmondson, who named it, describes psychological safety as a shared belief that the team is safe for taking interpersonal risks: saying "I am not sure", "I made a mistake", or "I think we are heading the wrong way", without being punished or made to feel small.

It is not niceness, comfort, or a lowered bar. A team that cannot say the difficult thing out loud cannot think together, and a team that cannot think together does not have WeQ, whatever is written on the values poster. Edmondson's work →

  6. A team builds it by going round, not by being told.

Nobody has ever become a better team by being handed a framework. The learning cycle is the same four beats every time, at whatever tempo the team can keep, and it is the going round that builds the capability rather than any one trip through it. Remind me of the cycle →

  7. The scorecard shows you where you actually are.

A team can be strong in one place and quietly undermined by another, and most teams cannot see which from the inside. The WeQ Team Assessment measures how a team really operates, then shows where the leader, the team and the people around it see things differently. Those gaps are usually the most useful thing on the page. See what a team scorecard shows →

That is the whole of it. The domains point at the team, the team runs on WeQ, WeQ needs safety to exist, the cycle is how it gets built, and the scorecard tells you where you are. Simple once you can see it, and almost impossible to see one piece at a time.

One thing we are deliberate about

We are not trying to make a team dependent on us. The point is capability that outlasts the engagement: people more able to see how, and more able to own it after we step back. A team that still needs us in three years is a team we did not finish the job with.

The three domains

The Tresane Model: Align Self, Align Relationships and Align Teams circling the Tresane mark, interconnected rather than sequential.

Align Self. Clarity of values, identity, and purpose. Leaders who know what grounds them can hold pressure without being consumed by it.

Align Relationships. Respect, curiosity, and trust. How a leader connects with others decides how much of the work moves without them pushing it.

Align Teams. Shared purpose, systems, and accountability. Teams that own the work together free the leader to lead instead of managing every detail.

Align self is the foundation, which is not the same as the starting line. The three interlock, so a team can enter wherever the pressure actually is.

The WeQ learning cycle

The same four beats every time, at whatever tempo the team can keep, with WeQ at the center.

1 2 3 4 SYSTEM EXPERIENCE SCORECARD LEARN & ADAPT

A scorecard is the team’s current picture. What the team does next begins the cycle again.
